AUSTRALIA
It is by any standard a fascinating place, it is an island but because of its scale it is a big country. Covering a total area of 7.69 million square kilometres, mainland Australia is the world’s largest island - but smallest continent. Australia is also the only continent that is governed as a single country. In distance, the continent stretches about 3700 kilometres from north to south and 4000 kilometres from east to west, making it the sixth-largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the United States and Brazil.
The diversity of the landscape is just awesome because it contains deserts, snow clad mountains, magnificent forests so diverse you cant help but be astonished by the various tree species. The animal and bird variations are equally unexpected and exciting as you travel this fantastic land. Deserted sandy beaches, coral reefs, tropical flowers, Blue Mountains & blue seas, which you find hard to comprehend, Australia quite simply has it all.
The unique animals are one of the many reasons people visit this country. Australia has more than 378 mammal species, 828 bird species, 4000 fish species, and 300 species of lizards, 140 snake species, two crocodile species and around 50 types of marine mammal. More than 80 per cent of the plants, mammals, reptiles and frogs are unique to Australia and are found no-where else. Some of the best-known animals are the kangaroo, koala, echidna, dingo, platypus, wallaby and wombat.
Australia is multicultural, an exciting melting pot, most of the population live along the coast in cities. It is in fact the 18th most urbanised country in the world with 70% of Australians living in the ten largest cities around the coast. Humour and irreverence abound making it a wonderful place to lift the spirit and make you smile. Australian culture is founded on stories of battlers, bushrangers and brave soldiers, sporting heroes, working heroes and plucky migrants. It’s all about a fair go, the great outdoors and a healthy helping of irony. Today Australia also defines itself by its Aboriginal heritage vibrant mix of cultures, innovative ideas and a thriving arts scene.
To capture and encompass all of the above and show Australia in a photographic spectrum of images is an impossible task in a month’s visit and tour. But I do hope you enjoy the library of images I have assembled from my time there and through these images you will enjoy something of the magic of Australia.
